2026 Community Empowerment Program – Binoculars Project

They are the unsung heroes—dedicated protectors of Sri Lanka’s extraordinary wildlife. As part of our 2026 community empowerment program, and with the generous support of our clients, we were proud to provide binoculars to three remarkable individuals. We wish them continued success in their invaluable work.

Sunil

Hailing from a small village in Sigiriya, Sunil’s passion for wildlife has earned him global recognition. He is especially renowned for his expertise in locating elusive nocturnal species. Beyond this, he plays an active role in safely removing and relocating wild animals from human settlements, while educating communities on the importance of coexistence. Birdwatching Sri Lanka regularly relies on Sunil’s deep knowledge when designing tours, and he also serves as a trusted local guide in tracking rare and hard-to-find species. We wish him all the best and hope these binoculars help him discover even more.

Sachith & Nipun

We first met Sachith as a curious young boy during visits to Debara Wewa tank in Tissamaharama. He was always eager to learn, asking endless questions about the birds and wildlife around him. His friend Nipun shared the same enthusiasm, and together they spent countless evenings observing and learning, inspired by the many birders who visited their village.

Today, they are widely known as “The Guardians of the Owls.” Visitors to their village recognize them as true “owl whisperers.” Through their efforts in educating locals and protecting owl habitats, they play a vital role in preserving these fascinating creatures and safeguarding Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity.

We would like to thank Mr. Chris & Mrs. Sue Potter of @chris_potter_country_sports for providing us with two binoculars for this worthy cause
