Day 1: Arrive Katunayake/ Kalpitiya
Upon arrival at the Katunayake Airport you will be met by our Naturalist Tour leader and will proceed to Kalpitiya. Our first Mammal of the tour no doubt should be the Indian Palm Squirrel which we will make acquaintance with almost every day. Torque Macaque: the first endemic mammal should be present along the road sides and on electric wires usually near food shops fighting to pick up any scraps or even snatch the fresh fruit on display. Grey Mongoose and Brown Mongoose will be another Mammal to look out for as they are seen frequenting the many Paddy fields. Grizzled Giant Squirrel is also no stranger to the many fruiting trees besides the roads.
We will reach Kalpitiya somewhere late in the evening and absorb the surroundings as waves crashing on the shores will be sweet lullabies as we call it a night.
Overnight stay in Kalpitiya
Day 2: Kalpitiya
With packed breakfast we board our small fishing boats and head to the ticket counter for formalities and thereafter journey in to the deep-sea surroundings Kalpitiya.
Overnight stay in Kalpitiya
Day 3 & 4 Kalpitiya
We will continue our whale & dolphin watching trips on these two days as well and will hope to encounter many species as possible with every trip taken. Depending on the weather conditions one boat ride may be undertaken in the Kalpitiya lagoon where Humpback Dolphins and the rare Dugong may show but this is often a case of luck. The afternoons will be spent at leisure or exploring the bird life around the Kalpitiya village
Overnight stay in Kalpitiya
Day 5: Kalpitiya / Koggala
After breakfast we will proceed to Koggala where we will spend the next three nights.
An optional visit to the Kirala Kele sanctuary for birding can be organized and will be a stark contrast from the birdlife experienced in Kalpitiya.
Overnight stay in Koggala
Day 6: Mirissa
With packed breakfast we will drive to the Mirissa harbor and boat our boat for a whale watching excursion. The southern seas of the island once boasted a large number of Blue Whales and Sperm Whales even outside the normal migratory season. There are still possibilities of sighting the Blue and Sperm whale but the frequent sightings include Brydes Whales and Fin Whales. Spinner and Bottle nosed Dolphins are a daily sighting whilst Orca, Pilot Whales and Rissoss Dolphins do put on a show. Green and Olive Ridley Turtles are common turtles seen here whilst a Whale Shark could be a real bonus.
On one of the afternoons at Koggala we will visit a Turtle Conservation Centre and the Dutch Colonial Fort.
Overnight stay in Koggala
Day 7: Mirissa
The previous days routine will probably best the same today with exceptions for personal time to explore the Koggala village or just soak up some sun and waves.
Overnight stay in Koggala
Day 8: Mirissa/ Katunayake
After another morning whale watching excursions, we will proceed to a hotel near the Airport.
Overnight stay in Katunayake
Day 9: Katunayake/ Departure
After breakfast we will proceed to the Airport in time for our departure flight.
